OMSI Science Pub – June 27, 2011

June 27, 2011—Science Pub Hillsboro

Mega Quake: What Lies in Wait for the Pacific Northwest and What You Can Do About It

with Yumei Wang and Allison Pyrch

Monday, June 27, 2011

7:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.

Venetian Theatre & Bistro, 253 E. Main Street, Hillsboro, Oregon 97123

Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Come early for food and drinks!

The news from Japan is devastating: whole towns destroyed in the recent earthquake and tsunami, thousands missing, the country in chaos. It may not seem like it, but the entire Pacific Northwest sits on the edge of a fault that, when it goes, could cause the same level of damage, or more. Yes, that’s WHEN it goes, not IF. The Cascadia Subduction Zone lies right off the coast of Oregon, Washington, and Canada, and when it slips, the entire PNW will likely suffer damage and the coastal communities could have as few as 20 minutes before a tsunami rushes ashore.

Yet it’s not all doom and gloom. Scientists and engineers are working to prepare our communities and infrastructure to withstand such devastation. At this special Science Pub, watch clips from a National Geographic feature called Mega Quake http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/episode/mega-quake-5563/Overview#tab-Overview which features Yumei Wang http://www.oregongeology.org/sub/FIELDOFFICES/profile-wang.htm, geotechnical engineer, Geohazards Team Leader from the Oregon Dept of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) and Allison Pyrch, senior engineer from Shannon & Wilson Geotechnical and Environmental Consultants http://www.shannonwilson.com/. After the screening, join Yumei, Allison, and representatives from the Red Cross for Q&A on what is in store for the Pacific Northwest and how you can prepare.

Science Pub Hillsboro is sponsored by TriQuint Semiconductor http://www.triquint.com/ and is open to anyone and everyone; no RSVP is necessary. Tell your friends. We hope to see you there!

Note date change: one week earlier than usual!

The Internet has changed the way we communicate, do business, and access information. But how has it affected our sexuality and sexual relationships? Can a person truly fall in love with someone online? How has “sex-tech” altered our view of intimacy? Learn more about how the Internet is rewriting the rules of romance and some of the fundamental principles of psychology as well.

L. Kris Gowen, PhD, has been a sexuality educator for over 10 years and is a former section leader for the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). As part of her role as faculty and research associate at Portland State University, she has been teaching Human Sexuality and other sexual health courses since 2002. Her research interests include how the Internet impacts adolescent sexuality.
